Doza Pumps vs venturi injectors, metering tips and VersaDial

Venturi injectors with metering tips are the cheapest and simplest way to dilute chemical in a wash. A Doza Pump costs more, and gives you a dose you can set, measure and price.

The short answer

If your chemical spend is small and one person looks after one site, tips can be all you need. Doza earns its place when you want to stop judging a dose by eye, when more than one person touches the settings, or when you run several sites.

Why the amount varies with a venturi

A venturi has no dose of its own. It draws chemical using the water moving through it, so what it draws changes when conditions change. Manufacturers say so themselves: the HydroMinder 511 manual says inlet water pressure and temperature can affect dilution ratios, so its chart figures are only approximate. If the pressure or suction moves, the chemical each car gets can move with it.

A Doza Pump works the other way around. It delivers a set rate for a set time, so the amount comes from the pump rather than from the water. Fed into an injector line, the suction pulls only what the pump delivers.

Tips still need upkeep

Metering tips are simple, but they aren't set and forget. Small openings can clog, so one car wash maintenance guide has technicians inspect each tip and fit a new one of the same color rather than reuse it. Trade guidance is to check tips regularly and replace them at the first signs of wear. So budget for a replacement schedule, and for the labor to keep to it.

What about VersaDial?

Hydra-Flex's VersaDial replaces individual tips with a dial of 32 settings, using a long channel rather than a small opening, which Hydra-Flex says eliminates clogs and means less maintenance. It costs far more than a tip, though less than a Doza Pump.

It's still a venturi system, so what it draws still depends on conditions at the injector. Hydra-Flex's own cut sheet says its draw rates are a starting point that will vary with a product's specific gravity and viscosity. Per-dose records, cost per car, roles and an audit log aren't listed in the materials we reviewed.

Where tips are the better pick

  • Price: they're inexpensive, and a tip costs very little to replace.
  • Simplicity: no power, no network, no account, and no moving parts in the injector.
  • Easy to source: widely stocked by car wash distributors.

Where Doza is the better pick

  • Steady delivery: the pump sets the rate, so the amount doesn't depend on venturi suction.
  • The dose is a number: no chart of tip colors, and no testing tips until the mix looks right.
  • Consistent across sites: the same setting and calibration method at every location.
  • Real usage: see use and cost by site and chemical instead of estimating from drum changes.
  • Control and history: changes are limited by role and recorded with who made them.
  • No water flow needed: it can dose neat products such as tire shine, or run on a timed schedule.

What to plan for with Doza

The pump tube is a wear part: about 1,000 pumping hours on white Standard tubing and 100 on black Tire Shine tubing, tracked in DozaLink. Remote features need 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and a DozaLink subscription per device. The unit mounts indoors, out of direct spray.

Common questions

Why does my metering tip dilution change?

A venturi draws chemical using the water moving through it, so the manufacturers' own instructions note that ratios shift with inlet pressure and temperature. Tips are usually tested and swapped until the mix looks right.

Do metering tips need replacing?

Yes. Tips can clog and they wear, so plan to inspect them regularly and replace them on a schedule. Trade guidance is to replace them at the first signs of wear.

Is Doza worth it over metering tips?

Tips cost far less up front. Doza is worth considering when chemical is a large expense, when you run several sites and need the same dose everywhere, or when you need to know what each car costs.
